UNION-TRIBUNE – VALERIE SCHER

A string of hits: the Summer Pops

After this weekend, there's still a whole lot of entertainment left in the San Diego Symphony Summer Pops season. Here are five of the highlights:

“Video Games Live” (July 24): Coinciding with Comic-Con, this program is sure to give gamers an earful, thanks to music from “Mario,” “Final Fantasy” and more.

“A Celtic Celebration With Eileen Ivers” (July 31): A fiddling sensation who blends virtuosity and showmanship, Ivers headlines the show that includes guest artists Brian Baynes (guitar) and Eric Rigler (uilleann pipes).

“Broadway Here and Now!” (Aug. 15-16): Expect tuneful favorites from such hits as “Hairspray,” “Dreamgirls” and even “Spamalot.”

“The Wizard of Oz – The Movie” (Aug. 17): The beloved 1939 film starring Judy Garland receives live musical accompaniment from the San Diego Symphony.

“1812 Tchaikovsky Spectacular” (Aug. 29-31): Principal Summer Pops conductor Matthew Garbutt leads the season-closing Tchaikovsky celebration that has become an annual tradition.
