Pacific Beach homeowners eagerly awaiting diagonal parking stripes

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

July 11, 2008

THE PROBLEM: If you have ever searched for parking in Pacific Beach during the summer, you can appreciate Joan Lieberman's frustration.

More than a year ago, someone – without city permission – painted the curb red in front of her condominium complex on Hornblend Street and Ocean Boulevard. Lieberman said a gentleman painted the curb red after he had been in a car accident pulling out of the complex's underground lot.

The site: Hornblend Street near Ocean Boulevard in Pacific Beach
“Residents were outraged,” she said. “There's not enough parking.”

Lieberman said 64 homeowners signed a petition, demanding that the city remove the red curbing since it meant losing two precious parking spots. The gentleman also appealed to the city's Transportation Engineering Division, asking that the curb remain red.

The city temporarily painted over the red but, eventually, sided with the painter. It painted the curb red between the driveway to the complex's parking garage and an alley to the east, and it also painted a small section west of the driveway. The city did paint over a red curb across the street from the complex. Bottom line: one lost parking space.

Lieberman said the city promised to restripe a portion of Hornblend west of Mission Boulevard, so cars would park diagonally instead of parallel. That would add three spaces.

The restriping was supposed to have been done by this summer, Lieberman said.

STATUS: Gary Pence, associate traffic engineer, said the city still plans to restripe the street, which will add three parking spots, including one for disabled motorists. But the process, which includes getting City Council approval, is taking longer than anticipated.

He said it will be another two or three months before the work can be done. In the meantime, Pence has asked the city's Street Division to remove a three-foot section of red curb at the western edge of the condo complex, which should allow an extra car to park on the street. That work should be done within 30 days.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Gary Pence, who can be reached at (619) 533-5184 or gpence@sandiego.gov. Requests for the Transportation Engineering Division should go to (619) 533-3126 or sandiego.gov/engineering-cip/services/public/request.shtml.
