Park in Mira Mesa looking somewhat down at the heels

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

July 14, 2008

THE PROBLEM: Maddox Neighborhood Park in Mira Mesa needs a face-lift.

THE SITE: Maddox Neighborhood Park in Mira Mesa
The park on Flanders Drive was dedicated almost 20 years ago, and it doesn't look like much has changed since then. Most of the playground equipment is dated and constructed of metal that becomes scorching hot during the summer. There's no lighting, and the grassy area has many brown patches.

Heather Koermer said a water leak in the dog park at Maddox that had made the area a muddy mess was fixed recently. But Koermer would like the San Diego Park and Recreation Department to update the park so her son, who is almost 2, can play on the equipment. She also said the lack of lighting makes the park a target for vandals.

“We're a little neglected,” Koermer said. “We have a park I can't take my son to.”

Koermer said she tried calling Park and Recreation but wasn't able to talk to anyone.

STATUS: Clay Bingham, a park deputy director in charge of facilities in Mira Mesa and many other neighborhoods, said Maddox is due for an overhaul. It will be at least two years before the equipment is replaced and lighting installed.

“We are definitely sympathetic,” Bingham said.

He said the cost of the improvements will be about $470,000. The department has identified where most of the money will come from and will work with the recreation council in Mira Mesa to get input from the community on what the park should include.

With the water leak fixed, park workers are trying to bring the grassy area back to life with additional watering and fertilization.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Clay Bingham, who can be reached at (619) 221-8910 and cbingham@sandiego.gov.

IT'S FIXED: Two signs have been added at the entrances to the trail through Gonzales Canyon in Carmel Valley. They admonish dog owners to clean up after their pets.

As we wrote in May, walkers and joggers in the area had to dodge piles of dog poop. Although dog owners are ultimately responsible, Pardee Homes, developer of homes in the area, offered to post signs and did so within weeks. Eventually, the trail will be turned over to the city of San Diego.

WHO GOT IT DONE: Karen Kosup, who can be reached at (858) 794-2512 and karen.kosup@pardeehomes.com.

NEED A PROBLEM SOLVED: Is there a problem government hasn't fixed despite your complaints? Whether it's a missing bus bench or an unkempt park anywhere in San Diego County, Just Fix It might be able to help.

Complaint forms are at justfixit.uniontrib.com, or call (800) 820-8714.
