Restroom at park not open early mornings

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

August 18, 2008

THE SITE: Fletcher Cove Beach Park in Solana Beach.
THE PROBLEM: Early on weekend mornings, the area around Fletcher Cove Beach Park is a happening place.

Cyclists and runners gather in a parking lot across from the Solana Beach park before setting out on organized treks. If they need access to a restroom before they head out around 7, they're out of luck.

The restroom is locked until as late as 8 a.m., said Byron Wishnek, who regularly surfs in the area. He suggested that it open by 6:30.

Just Fix It visited the park at 6:45 on a recent Sunday morning and saw about a dozen runners and cyclists tug at the locked restroom doors. A public-works employee arrived about 7:05 to unlock the doors. By then, most of the running and cycling groups had departed.

STATUS: Ah, the joys of small cities. We contacted Steve Kerr, Solana Beach's public-works operations manager, on Monday morning. By midafternoon, we heard from city spokesman Steve Didier.

Effective immediately, he said, public-works staff members will unlock the doors at 6:30 a.m. on weekends. Didier said the city will monitor rest-room use and could adjust the hours during months when daylight-saving time isn't in effect.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Steve Kerr, who can be reached at (858) 720-2481 and skerr@cosb.org. Repair requests for Solana Beach should be directed to the Public Works Department at (858) 793-8796.

NEED A PROBLEM SOLVED: Is there a problem government hasn't fixed despite your complaints? Just Fix It might be able to help.

Complaint forms are at justfixit.uniontrib.com, or call (800) 820-8714.
