One by one, vacant lot, pothole and wheelchair ramp are remedied

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

August 22, 2008

THE PROBLEM I: Richard Sells is a persistent man. He called Caltrans repeatedly about transients and weeds in a vacant lot owned by the transportation agency near Kettner Boulevard and West Redwood Street.

THE SITE: Kettner Boulevard near Redwood Street in San Diego.
But nothing was done. The weeds grew taller, and homeless people came and went through an unlocked gate. The large, fenced property directly beneath an on-ramp to Interstate 5 had once been leased to an airport park-and-ride service.

STATUS: Caltrans last week cut back the weeds and told the homeless living there that they needed to move on. The gate was relocked, and we are told Caltrans will keep a closer eye on the property.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: William Valle, deputy director for maintenance and traffic for Caltrans District 11, who can be reached at (619) 688-6670 or william.valle@dot.ca.gov.

THE PROBLEM II: Joseph Dyresen is also a persistent man. He called San Diego's Street Division about a section of Heritage Road in Otay Mesa that was so badly worn that motorists drive on the wrong side of the road to avoid it.

“It's a real danger,” Dyresen said. He'd also complained about a huge pothole on Heritage at Pogo Road. With many tow yards and junkyards, Heritage attracts tow trucks and other large vehicles.

STATUS: Heritage Road is at Brown Field, one of San Diego's municipal airports. But the repairs will be made by the Street Division. Hasan Yousef, the Street Division's deputy director, said repairs should be done by the end of the month.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Hasan Yousef, who can be reached at (619) 527-7504 or hyousef@sandiego.gov.

IT'S GETTING FIXED: Steve Hollinger soon will not have to ride his wheelchair into traffic to get down Greyling Street in San Diego's Serra Mesa neighborhood.

As we wrote in July, the work was supposed to be done by this winter. However, the city requested that the contractor installing the ramps fast-track the job. The contractor, New Century Construction, was happy to oblige. The ramps closest to Hollinger's home are already done.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Patti Boekamp, San Diego's director of engineering and capital projects, who can be reached at (619) 236-6274 or pboekamp@sandiego.gov.
