Fourth festivities include fireworks, parades

UNION-TRIBUNE

July 4, 2008

Independence Day activities are planned throughout North County today.

The North County Transit District will operate extra Sprinter trains between Oceanside and Escondido to help move people to and from some of the festivities.

The transit district is most concerned with providing more transportation to handle the thousands of people expected to attend the all-day O'Fest street fair and 9 p.m. fireworks in Oceanside. Sprinters normally operate hourly on weekends and holidays, but they will run every half-hour today from 4:33 a.m. to 8:33 p.m.

The transit district will add trains that will operate from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. For information, go to the transit district's Web site: gonctd.com.

Here is a list of Fourth of July celebrations around North County:

Oceanside: The Yankee Doodle Dinghy Parade will cruise the harbor at 2 p.m. O'Fest Carnival on The Strand begins at 10 a.m., with live music from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Oceanside Pier Amphitheatre. Fireworks at the pier at 9 p.m.

Escondido: Afternoon festivities at Grape Day Park include game and food booths, music and entertainment. The Cruisin' Grand classic car show will be a block away starting late afternoon. Fireworks at 9 p.m.

Poway: Beginning at 10 a.m., train rides, music, crafts, historical demonstrations and more will be at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road. Fireworks at 9 p.m. at Poway High School, 15500 Espola Road. Tickets $2 with parking and shuttle service at nearby Lake Poway.

Rancho Bernardo: Ceremony honoring the military at 10:45 a.m. and a Spirit of the Fourth community fair with entertainment from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Webb Park. A parade begins at 3:30 on Acena Drive and adjacent streets. At 6:30 p.m., live music and musket-and cannon-firing demonstrations precede the 9 p.m. fireworks at Bernardo Heights Middle School.

Julian: No fireworks. All-day festivities begin at 10 a.m., including a mock gunfight on Main Street, flyovers by World War II aircraft, a parade at noon, horses, a quilt show and a deep-pit barbecue.
