LAS VEGAS – The National Park Service says a 62-year-old woman from Romania was killed in a boating accident at Lake Mead in Nevada.
Park Service spokeswoman Roxanne Dey says a Las Vegas man told authorities that he and his mother, Elena Vlad, both fell from a boat when the boat collided with land or rocks just before 5 a.m. Thursday.
The son told authorities his mother hit her head on rocks and was knocked unconscious, but she was wearing a life jacket and he was able to get her back into the boat.
Dey says the man radioed for help and was met by Park Service rangers and employees at a marina on the Colorado River reservoir, about 30 miles east of Las Vegas. A medical helicopter team pronounced Vlad dead at the marina.
Dey says it was the 16th death this year at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and the second nighttime boating accident in less than a week.
