Barrett: The 63 anglers checked reported 667 bass, 2 crappie and 1 bluegill, all released. Closes Sept. 28. Open Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. Reservations may be made through Ticketmaster at (619) 220-8497 or

Chollas: Open daily to youngsters 15 and under. San Diego Fly Fishers sponsors a Lend-A-Rod program on Sundays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and it includes free bait and tackle and fishing tips.
Cuyamaca: The 10th annual Orville P. Ball Memorial Fishing In the Pines Free Kids Derby is set for Sept. 27. Fishing starts at 6 a.m., with registration at 8. All fish must be weighed in by 12:45. Prizes, raffle, food, all for the family. Crappie, bullheads and channel catfish, plus a few trout, hitting. Lake has a new area for RV groups. Camping area is open to a total of eight rigs, with a minimum rental to four. The rate is $200 a night for all eight sites. Can be rented by single RVs if the sites aren't reserved. Also, there are seven tent sites in the Lone Pine area. Call (877) 581-9904 for information. Private boats now are allowed on the lake, but the boats must be sprayed for quagga mussels by a high-pressure heated wash prior to entering the lake. Cost is $10 for the spraying and it's good for multiple trips to Cuyamaca so long as the boat is not used in another reservoir in between visits. Open daily.
Diamond Valley Lake: Bass fishing finally slowed down, but it remains better here than any other lake in Southern California. Bass in the 2-and 3-pound range are hitting in water between 15 feet and 40 feet. Topwater action is better early and late. Brody Hoffman, San Diego, 3-pound bass, Roboworm, 15 feet of water. Striped bass and catfish also hitting. Jesse Mena, Hemet, 20.42-pound channel catfish, night crawlers, South Shoreline. Open daily.
Dixon: Due to the construction of a new ramp, Fishing Pier No. 1 remains closed. Fair fishing for catfish early and late in deeper water and at the Buoy Line. Bass action getting better. Dan and Shirley Siemens, Huntington Beach, caught and released over ten bass, Boat Dock Cove. The catch included Dan Siemens' best bass ever, a 7-pounder. They used Senkos. Mike Collins, San Diego, 11-0 bass, drop-shot plastic worm, Boat Dock. Open daily.
El Capitan: The 115 anglers checked reported 6 bass kept (141 bass released), 4 channel catfish and 2 blue catfish. Fall schedule with Thursdays and Fridays open to fishing and general boating and water contact activities (waterskiing, wakeboarding, jetskiing, towing inflatables in the front bay only), Saturdays and Sundays open to fishing, boating and water contact activities in both the front bay and North Arm. Mondays open to fishing and general boating only. Rental boats are available on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. On Sundays they stop renting boats at 10 a.m. All persons entering reservoir property must purchase a day use permit.
Henshaw: Lake hours now are 6 a.m. to dusk. Good fishing from the 150-foot Fish-N-Float dock and from shore. Rental boats available from 6 a.m. to a half hour before sunset. Fair catfish action on night crawlers and shrimp. Best areas are near the dam and in the inlets. Crappie have resurfaced. Bass fishing is the big sleeper here, with some fair fishing for bass up to 6 pounds. Dave and Marie Estrada, 6 channel catfish, including an 8-pound, 8-ouncer. Jemelle Mitchell, 6, San Diego 5 channel catfish, up to 3 pounds. Deron Young, San Diego, 5 channel catfish, up to 2 pounds. Greg Johnson, Hemet, and Bruce Brown, Eastlake, 28 crappie up to 1.5 pounds. Gene, Cindy and Scarlet Butler, Lakeside, caught and released four bass up to 3 pounds and also caught two bluegill. Open daily for fishing.
Hodges: The 108 anglers checked reported 41 bass (all released), 15 bluegill, 5 channel catfish and 1 crappie. Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
Jennings: Victor Gonzales, San Diego, 24-8 blue catfish, mackerel, Hermit Cove. Lonnie Carpenter, Imperial Beach, 14-8 channel, mackerel, Buoy Line. Loveland: The 57 anglers reported 16 bass (all released), 9 bluegill, 2 carp, 1 channel catfish. Vince Ibarra, National City, 10-8 channel catfish, Senko, Area 4. Open daily to hike-in fishing only on a limited area of shoreline. No permits required. Fishing license is required.
Miramar: The 67 anglers reported 1 bass kept (6 bass released), 33 bluegill and 5 channel catfish. Pay fees at iron ranger or electronic pay station near the concession building.
Morena: Bluegill fishing continues to be best here, with channel catfish and bass action fair. Andrew Spurling, San Diego, limit (25) of bluegill, red worms, below the cabins. Stuart Baldino, Descanso, 5-0 channel catfish, night crawlers, Paradise Island. Lanny McCay, San Diego, three channel catfish, 9-0 total, mackerel, North End. Cody McCay, San Diego, two 2-pound channel catfish. Open daily.
Murray: The 96 anglers checked reported 22 bass (all released), 40 bluegill and 5 channel catfish. Open daily to fishing and boating. Pay fees at iron rangers near the abandoned concession building or at key access points.
Otay, Lower: The 257 anglers checked kept 11 bass (released 323), 798 bluegill and 19 channel catfish. Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Pay fees at iron rangers near the boat launch and abandoned concession building. Boats now available for rent.
Otay, Upper: The 17 anglers reported 49 bass, all released. Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday for fishing, sunrise to sunset. Upper Otay is a catch and release only fishery. Bait is not permitted, only artificial lures with barbless hooks. Boats are not permitted on Upper Otay, only shore fishing, waders and float tubes.
Poway: Greg Campbell, San Diego 8.5 pound catfish, chicken livers, Fishing Pier. Todd Wilson, Mira Mesa 7.5-pound catfish, mackerel, Log Boom. Kirk Aguon, Poway, 4.8-pound bass, red and white jig, Hidden Bay. Matt Honick, Poway, 3.75 bass, Fluke, Boulder Bay. Open Wednesday through Sunday. In order to prevent the introduction and infestation of quagga mussels, the following items are prohibited at Lake Poway: float tubes, private motors and anchors, live bait containers, fish finders, floating catch baskets, live bait from any source other than the Lake Poway concession, any items the staff considers to be potential contaminants.
Santee Lakes: Very good catfish action. Conner Troxel, 10, Santee, 12-0 and 3-0 channel catfish, stinkbait, Lake 4. Nick Omahen, 14, San Diego, 15-0 channel catfish, Lake 3. Check www.santeelakes.com. Open daily.
San Vicente: The 56 anglers checked reported 8 bass kept (48 bass released), 65 bluegill, 7 channel catfish, 6 redear sunfish and 1 blue catfish. San Vicente went out in style, kicking out its last giant blue catfish, a 46-pound beauty to Toni Dean McAfee, who promptly released the big blue. That blue catfish and others that were planted in 1985 likely will die of old age before the lake is reopened for recreation. If they don't, look for one to break the pending state-record 113.40-pounder that was caught back in July. Closed to all recreation for six to nine years for construction on the dam. The level of the reservoir will be raised to add more capacity and allow for more emergency water storage. Sutherland: Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Sweetwater: The 74 anglers reported 1 bass kept (11 bass released), 19 carp, 7 channel catfish. Ronald Pongphila, National City, 3 channel catfish, totaling 18-2 with an 11-7, mackerel, Nacion Point. Luis Garcia, Spring Valley, 14-4 channel catfish, chicken liver, below the parking lot. Open Saturday, Sunday and Monday to limited shoreline fishing only.
Wohlford: Lake is now open on weekends only until it's stocked with trout in mid-December. Bass fishing remains steady, with smaller fish biting. Channel catfish action fair, with Scott Osborne, Valley Center, landing a 4-15 channel catfish on a shiner at the South Shore Rock Pile. Osborne also caught a 1-4 crappie on a shiner, same area. Jerry Harris, Riverside, 1-8 crappie, live golden shiner, Boat Dock Cove. Bass conditions remain productive. Jeff Hodges, Valley Center, caught and released a 6-5 bass, Senko, Bass Point. Ban on private boats remains in place due to the threat of quagga mussels. Other banned equipment include canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, etc. Rental boats available. Open Saturday and Sunday only.
Pt. Loma Sportfishing, H&M Landing, Fisherman's Landing: 150 anglers, seven overnight boats: 41 albacore, 23 yellowtail, 19 bluefin, 366 yellowfin, 43 dorado, 128 skipjack. 51 anglers, two half-day boats: 1 yellowtail, 31 rockfish, 1 lingcod, 28 sculpin. 68 anglers, three three-quarter-day boats: 7 yellowtail, 12 dorado, 36 calico, 8 barracuda, 60 bonito, 7 yellowfin, 5 rockfish.
Seaforth: 14 anglers, one one-and-a-half-day boat: 8 bluefin, 64 yellowfin, 20 dorado. 16 anglers, one full-day boat: 6 albacore, 2 yellowfin, 4 dorado, 1 yellowtail. 21 anglers, one three-quarter-day boat: 1 albacore, 26 yellowfin, 13 dorado, 4 yellowtail. 39 anglers, two half-day boats: 21 yellowtail, 55 bonito, 9 barracuda, 6 calico bass, 2 sand bass, 1 rockfish, 1 whitefish.
Mission Bay Sportfishing: 20 anglers, one overnight boat: 1 albacore, 1 dorado, 32 skipjack, 55 yellowfin. 6 anglers, one three-quarter-day boat: 4 albacore, 1 dorado, 5 yellowfin. 66 anglers, two half-day boats: 6 barracuda, 101 bonito, 6 calico bass, 4 rockfish, 29 yellowtail.
Cabo San Lucas: Dorado action improved significantly last week, with good catches on the Pacific side of Cabo. Boats also averaged nearly one billfish per fishing day. Striped marlin and sailfish providing the most billfish action. School-sized yellowfin tuna in the 15-to 20 pound range, and the dorado are running in the 15-pound range, with a few larger bulls taken.
Noteworthy: Marlin Tournament: Team Bad Company, with San Diego-area captains Steve Lassley and Pete Groesbeck, held the first-day lead at the Contender Avalon Billfish Classic. Jason Jepson reports that the first day “closed with a bang and a final rush of hook ups.”
Team Bad Company hooked up two minutes before the order came for lines out of the water. Reel Nice N' Easy also was hooked up during the last ten minutes.
Team Bad Company released a third fish to give them the lead for Day One. Jimmy Kingsmill caught and released Bad Company's third and last fish of the day.
Jepson said there were 11 marlin caught and released on Day One. Three boats each had two releases for the day – Reel Nice N' Easy, Ruckus and Gambler. The third annual Contender Avalon Billfish Classic runs through tomorrow. It features a Pro-Am format with separate tournament and daily jackpot prizes to qualified amateur teams.
Tournament: Rich Negron won the grand prize of the 2008 Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge with a 41.1-pound albacore. He fished on the Sea Duce Me. Tail Party was the high boat overall in the 2008 Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge and also took the outboard award. Get Sum was the top large boat, and Tail Party was the top small boat and high boat overall. Southwestern Yacht Club took high club honors. Jason Tharp, aboard Tail Party, landed a 38.8-pound yellowfin, to take the small boat division. Aleksander Renshaw, fishing on Plan B, caught a 34.1-pound yellowfin, top fish caught in the small boat division. Louie Tejada, 24.2-pound yellowfin, top fish in the charter boat division, aboard the Dominator out of Mission Bay Sportfishing. Cameron Lapham, 25.5-pound yellowfin, top fish in the junior division, 11 years and under, aboard the Snooper. Roman Lira, 27.2-pound yellowfin aboard the Jittin Jiggy, won the junior division, 12 to 15 years old category. Walter Gierucki won the dorado division with a 29-pounder aboard the Goin' Deeper. Louie Ianniello won the yellowtail division with an 11-pounder. Marianna Sparks, 27.7-pound yellowfin aboard the Get Sum, was the top lady angler. The tournament drew 120 boats and nearly 500 anglers.
Kayak Tournament: Results of the sixth annual Steve Moyer Memorial: Event drew 140 kayakers, and they fished in tough conditions. They weighed in 18 fish. Gabe Martin took the heaviest fish jackpot and the halibut division with a 42.2-pound halibut. Greg Tsujiuchi was second with a 33.4-pound halibut. Dave Kwalick was third with a 30.4-pound yellowtail, but first in the yellowtail division. Ed Walker landed a 5-pound bonito. The junior division went to Ben Sorrenson with a 4-pound bonito. Ben Hendricks took the spearfishing division with a 13-pound yellowtail. Robert Yakemonis caught and released a 23-inch calico bass to take the Catch Photo and Release Calico Bass division. Organizer Jim Sammons, who started the tournament to pay tribute to his friend, Steve Moyer, a beloved kayaker who died of cancer, said $12,700 was raised for the American Cancer Society.
Turkey Hunt: Not only will San Diego-area hunters get to hunt turkeys this fall for the first time, but juniors throughout the state will get to hunt wild turkeys the weekend prior to the opening of spring turkey hunting. The California Fish and Game Commission approved the additional special youth turkey hunt for the 2009 season. The dates next year for the special junior hunt will be March 21-22. Any junior hunter 16 and younger who has a junior hunting license may hunt that weekend. The spring season for all hunters runs from March 28 to May 3 next year. The state's other special junior hunt, which runs for two weeks after the close of the general spring turkey season, will remain in effect and go from May 4 through May 17.
