
Barrett: The 132 anglers checked reported 850 bass, 107 bluegill and 1 crappie, all released. Closed for the season. Waterfowl starts here Oct. 18, with hunting permitted on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Chollas: Open daily to youngsters 15 and under. San Diego Fly Fishers sponsors a Lend-A-Rod program on Sundays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and it includes free bait and tackle and fishing tips.
Cuyamaca: Tenth annual Fishin' in the Pines Kid's Derby was a huge success Saturday as more than 660 kids showed up for the big day. Counting parents and others there were an estimated 1,500 at the lake for what was National Hunting and Fishing Day. The San Diego Anglers cooked over 700 pounds of yellowfin tuna and dorado, which came from Capt. John Grabowski's mid-September trip on Linda Palm-Halpain's Red Rooster III. Mario Ghio of Sportsmen's Seafood filleted and prepared the fish for the derby. Sponsors such as Shimano, Berkley, Pure Fishing, Lakeside Sporting Goods, Barnacle Bill's Bait and Tackle, H&M Landing, Seaforth and many more contributed. Lake was stocked with 1,700 pounds from Jess Ranch Fish Hatchery and another 1,600 pounds from the DFG's Mojave Hatchery. Trout hitting from the surface down right now, with night crawlers working best. Christian Anzy, El Cajon, 21-0 channel catfish, night crawler, dike area. Juvenal Arevalo, El Cajon, 17-0 channel catfish, night crawler, dike area. Steve Carpenter, El Cajon, 6-2 bass, Power Bait, Lone Pine tree. Results of the Orville P. Ball Fishin' in the Pines Kids Derby: Chris Michel, 1.9 trout, grand prize winner. Ages 4-7: First, Elane Sweker, 1.8 pounds; second, Norman Stone, 1.5 trout; third, Victoria Toetter 1.4 pounds.. Ages 8-11 : First, Andrea Romero 1.6 pounds; second, Zac Storer, 1.6 pounds; third, Brandi Koher, 1.4 pounds; Ages 12-15: First, Kim Durfinger 1.6 pounds; second, Teddy Conley 1.4 pounds; third, David Evens, 1.2 pounds. Lake has a new area for RV groups. Camping area is open to a total of eight rigs, with a minimum rental to four. The rate is $200 a night for all eight sites. Can be rented by single RVs if the sites aren't reserved. Also, there are seven tent sites in the Lone Pine area. Call (877) 581-9904 for information. Private boats now are allowed on the lake, but the boats must be sprayed for quagga mussels by a high-pressure heated wash prior to entering the lake. Cost is $10 for the spraying and it's good for multiple trips to Cuyamaca so long as the boat is not used in another reservoir in between visits. Open daily.
Diamond Valley Lake: Bass action, and all fishing, really, slowed, but then, it had to after the wide-open bite all summer long. Smaller bass still hitting. Trout being caught at 40 to 50 feet, but a few taken by those drifting night crawlers. The West Dam is the hot spot. Catfish action in Rawson Cove the best. Check the dams for bluegill, too. Live worms or mini-jigs tipped with meal worms or wax worms working best. Open daily.
Dixon: Fair fishing for channel catfish and bass. Open daily.
El Capitan: The 97 anglers checked reported 156 bass (all released), 60 crappie, 5 channel catfish. Fall schedule with Thursdays and Fridays open for fishing, general boating and water contact activities (water-skiing, wakeboarding, Jet Skiing, towing inflatables in the front bay only), and Saturdays and Sundays open for fishing, boating and water contact activities in the front bay and North Arm. Mondays are open for fishing and general boating. Rental boats available Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. On Sundays, boat rentals stop at 10 a.m. All persons entering reservoir property must purchase a day use permit.
Henshaw: Catfish, crappie and bluegill all active right now. Vern Schwietzer, Santa Ysabel, caught and released 12 channel catfish, chicken livers near the aerator, with his heaviest going 6 pounds. Gary Smith, Lancaster, and Todd Rogers, Compton, caught and released 22 channel catfish, with one topping 8 pounds and kept 20 crappie up to 2-0 each. They used shrimp and fished off Rocky Point and also off Monkey Island. Tony White Eagle, Santa Ysabel, fished the end of the Fish-n-Float and caught and released eight channel catfish, including three that went 5-0 each. Hodges: The 76 anglers checked reported 27 bass (all released), 7 crappie and 4 channel catfish. Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
Jennings: Bass fishing turned on close to shore, with bass hitting Senkos, Ikas and Bass Assassins, according to Hugh Marx, supervising ranger at the lake. He said the best technique is to cast ashore and drag something into the water to attract bass. Marx recommends using greens and browns in crawdad imitations or stick baits. Prime time is 6:15 a.m to 9 a.m. and then again from 5 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Bass moving deeper later in the day. Catfish continue to hit along Buoy Line in 80 feet and deeper. The first trout plant is Oct. 22. David Palmer, Lakeside, 7-13 bass, mudsucker, Half Moon Cove. Blaze Conant, Lakeside, 6-12 bass, mudsucker, Hermit Cove. Loveland: The 66 anglers reported 2 bass kept (5 bass released), 10 bluegill, 11 carp, 6 bullhead and 4 channel catfish. Open daily to hike-in fishing only on a limited area of shoreline. No permits required. Fishing license is required.
Miramar: The 76 fishermen checked reported 7 bass kept (21 bass released), 95 bluegill, 20 channel catfish. No boat rentals until December. Pay fees at iron ranger or electronic pay station near the concession building. Open daily to boating and fishing.
Morena: Open daily.
Murray: The 72 anglers checked reported 3 bass kept (11 bass released), 16 bluegill. No boat rentals until December. Pay fees at iron rangers near the abandoned concession building or at key access points. Open daily to fishing and boating.
Otay, Lower: The 245 anglers reported 17 bass kept (277 bass released), 582 bluegill, 24 channel catfish and 1 blue catfish. Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Pay fees at iron rangers near the boat launch and abandoned concession building. Boats now available for rent.
Otay, Upper: The 9 anglers reported 18 bass (all released). Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday for fishing, sunrise to sunset. Upper Otay is a catch and release only fishery. Bait is not permitted, only artificial lures with barbless hooks. Boats are not permitted on Upper Otay, only shore fishing, waders and float tubes.
Poway: Early-morning bass action is good along the shoreline. Lake is open on weekends only in October. Open Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to sunset. Starting Nov. 1, the lake will be open Wednesday through Sunday each week. In order to prevent the introduction and infestation of quagga mussels, the following items are prohibited at Lake Poway: float tubes, private motors and anchors, live bait containers, fish finders, floating catch baskets, live bait from any source other than the Lake Poway concession, any items the staff considers to be potential contaminants.
Santee Lakes: Bass biting early and later in the day. Trout season opens here Nov. 8 with lots of trophy trout stocked, with tagged trout for prizes. Catfish action continues to be fair with some larger ones caught. Ray Paul, 14-0 channel catfish, mackerel, Lake 6. Another 1,000 pounds of channel catfish will be added this week (Friday). San Vicente: Closed to all recreation for six to nine years for construction on the dam. The level of the reservoir will be raised to add more capacity and allow for more emergency water storage. Skinner: Catfish action continues, and fair fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill and stripers. Peter Coyle, Fallbrook, 5-0 striped bass, Rattletrap (trout colored), Ramp 2.
Sutherland: The 54 anglers checked reported 1 bass kept (126 bass released), 19 bluegill, 54 crappie, 5 channel catfish and 7 carp (to 13 pounds) and 1 blue catfish (15.95-pounder). Lake will close to fishing Oct. 17 at dusk. Waterfowl hunting starts Oct. 19 and will be open Thursdays and Sundays for waterfowl hunts. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Sweetwater: The 57 anglers checked reported 8 bass kept (7 bass released), 7 carp, 2 channel catfish. Open Saturday, Sunday and Monday to limited shoreline fishing only.
Wohlford: Open Saturday and Sunday until mid-December. Ban on private boats remains in place due to the threat of quagga mussels. Other banned equipment include canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, etc. Rental boats available.

Seaforth: 33 anglers, one 1½-day boat: 8 albacore, 32 yellowfin, 1 dorado, 30 skipjack, 5 yellowtail. 28 anglers, one three-quarter-day boat: 14 bonito, 15 barracuda, 125 sand bass, 30 rockfish, 1 sheephead, 20 sculpin. 69 anglers, three half-day boats: 18 red rock cod, 1 calico bass, 4 sand bass, 64 rockfish, 10 whitefish, 10 sheephead, 12 sculpin, 2 lingcod.
Oceanside: 12 anglers, one three-quarter-day boat: 22 sculpin, 17 rockfish, 15 vermillion rockfish, 13 bocaccio.
Mission Bay Sportfishing: 43 anglers, two half-day boats: 1 barracuda, 21 bonito, 3 calico bass, 1 ling cod, 20 rockfish, 1 sand bass, 4 sculpin.
Cabo San Lucas: The dorado are going wild here, with easy limits each day. Robert Marquez reports the best fishing is on the Pacific side, in an area from the San Cristobal Ridge to the Golden Gate Bank and also at the Finger Bank, where there's also striped marlin, yellowfin and a few wahoo mixed with the dorado. owfin and even a few wahoo. Fish are staging and should be plentiful for the upcoming marlin tournaments.

San Diego Anglers: Bob Fletcher, president of the Sportfishing Association of California, is the guest speaker tomorrow night at the San Diego Anglers monthly meeting at the Bahia Hotel on Mission Bay. Fletcher will talk about the Marine Life Protection Act and give updates on the process that now has moved to Southern California. Meeting starts at 6:30 p.m.
