LeDuc sweeps two-day CORR card

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

September 15, 2008

Kyle LeDuc completed a sweep of the weekend's featured Pro-4 races and series points leader Rob MacCachren scored his first Pro-2 victory at The Quarry yesterday in the Championship Off-Road Racing event in Chula Vista.

LeDuc's victory was his third in the past four CORR rounds for the four-wheel-drive pickup class.

MacCachren passed Carl Renezeder on the final lap to claim his sixth Pro-2 victory of the season and his 70th career closed-course win.

“I've been struggling in Chula Vista,” said MacCachren, a veteran desert racer. “The restart really helped. We drove a smart race in the beginning and then we went for it. It was a great race.”

Renezeder led the first 15 laps of the 16-lap main but lost the lead when MacCachren went to the outside in the uphill first turn.

“I was protecting the inside,” Renezeder said. “There wasn't enough time to make a run.”

Ricky Johnson of Encinitas finished third in the Pro-2 race. After contending early for the lead, Saturday winner Jerry Welchel pulled off the track just after the midpoint.

LeDuc raced through the Pro-4 pack a second straight day after starting ninth on the grid. He passed Rick Huseman for the lead with four laps to go and held off former class champions Johnny Greaves and Renezeder to complete the sweep.

“I felt really good on the last lap with Johnny closing in on me,” LeDuc said. “Back-to-back wins are unbelievable.”

“I thought I had what I needed to catch Kyle,” said Greaves, who swapped second and third-place finishes with Renezeder over the weekend. “I waited too long to engage. Next time, I'll go about it a little earlier.”

Greg George completed a sweep of the weekend's two Pro Buggy races. Former national ATV champion Marty Hart won the Pro Lite race after finishing second on Saturday.
