Poway senior left-hander Drew Leininger ended the season with a perfect record, while the Titans simply had a perfect ending in the section Division I baseball final.
Leininger allowed two earned runs over 4 1/3 innings and senior Donovan Dooney went 2-for-3 with four RBI to help lead the top-seeded Titans past La Costa Canyon 8-3 for their second title in three years last night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Poway (31-6) had already set a school record for wins in a season heading into the game, but it need one more victory to validate its standing as the section's top-ranked team.
For his part, Leininger finished the season 7-0.
“We set out goals this year to play as good as we can as long as could, and we did that,” said Leininger, who allowed four hits. “We played as a team and that resulted in the (section) championship. There's nothing better than that.”
The win gave the Titans a four-game sweep of the 10th-seeded Mavericks (22-13) this year. As they did in 2006, the Titans lost their first game in the double-elimination bracket, then won five straight to take the title.
“It's a big relief actually because we've been ranked real high all year,” Poway coach Bob Parry said. “There was a lot of pressure, and our kids came through.”
Poway opened a 6-1 lead with four runs in the fourth, highlighted by the first of a pair of two-run doubles by Dooney. After Mavericks freshman Phillip Evans hit a two-run double in the top of the fifth, Dooney added another in the bottom half.
“It's surreal right now,” Dooney said. “It's so amazing. This is the best team ever.”
Dillon Dooney, Donovan's sophomore brother, added two hits and scored the Titans' first run in the fourth. Jason Brunansky added an RBI single in the fourth and Tony Simis had a sacrifice fly.
LCC sophomore Max MacNabb pitched three-plus innings, giving up five runs and five hits, with eight walks and four strikeouts. The Mavericks used five pitchers.
To open the scoring, the Mavericks' Mitch Tybroksi led off the third with an infield single and eventually scored on a passed ball.
“Poway was so highly touted,” LCC coach Justin Machado said. “But when we scored first, I thought we had the momentum.”
In the bottom half, Poway moved ahead by combining a single, a wild pitch and four walks for two runs. Josh Anderson hit a one-out single and eventually scored on a passed ball with the bases loaded, and Steven Halcomb drew a bases-loaded walk on a full count to bring in the second run.
