USD's win streak ended by Fullerton

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

April 30, 2008

USD's school-record 16-game winning streak came to an abrupt end last night with a 12-3 loss at Cal State Fullerton.

The streak helped USD crack the Top 10 this week – checking in at No. 8 – in Baseball America's national rankings, and the Toreros (35-12) appeared eager to keep the good times rolling when catcher Logan Gelbrich hit a two-run homer in the first inning against the No. 12-ranked Titans (27-15).

Fullerton came right back with two runs in the bottom of the first, but the Toreros added a run in the second to make it 3-2.

That's when things began to unravel.

The Titans scored five runs in the bottom of the second off USD starter Ricardo Pecina, who was coming off the strongest start of his three-year career. Pecina (4-3) wasn't as sharp this time out. The junior left-hander allowed seven hits and seven runs (five earned) over 4 2/3 innings, with three walks and six strikeouts.

The Toreros bullpen did not fare any better, allowing five more runs over the next six innings. Not that it mattered. Fullerton starter Kevin Rath was pulled after two innings and three Titans relievers checked USD on four hits over the final seven innings.

The Toreros now will turn their attention to this weekend's three-game West Coast Conference series at Pepperdine. First-place USD leads the Waves by three games.

SDSU falls to Arizona

San Diego State starting pitcher Nate Solow pitched well enough to win, but the Aztecs came up short in a 3-2 loss at Arizona.

Solow (3-6) allowed seven hits and three runs – a run in the fifth making the difference – over 5 2/3 innings and struck out eight against the Wildcats (29-13).

DH Bubba Rudy drove in both runs for the Aztecs (25-20) with doubles in the second and fourth innings.

The teams meet again this afternoon to complete the two-game series.

More baseball

Point Loma Nazarene University scored two runs in the ninth to erase a 3-3 tie and beat host Cal State Los Angeles 5-3 in a nonconference game.

In the ninth, two CSULA errors helped open the door and Sea Lions second baseman Jon Tierney had an RBI single to make a winner of reliever Robbie Naegele (1-2). PLNU is 28-20, CSULA 25-22.

Olsen honored

Retired Grossmont College coach Ed Olsen will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Griffins' home game against Southwestern tomorrow at 2.

Olsen, who compiled a 516-376-7 record in 22 years at Grossmont, will be inducted into the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on May 23 in Fresno.
