LONG BEACH – Gavin Hedstrom had three hits as Fresno State defeated the University of San Diego 5-1 to capture the NCAA Long Beach regional Monday.
Fresno State (40-28), the Western Athletic Conference champions and No. 4 seed, advances to the Super Regionals against Arizona Sate in a best of three series starting next Saturday at Tempe. It marks the first time the Bulldogs have advanced to a Super Regional.
USD, ranked 6th in the nation and champions of the West Coast Conference champions, finish the season with a 44-17 record.
Sammy Solis (3-2) took the loss.
Holden Sprague (4-2) gave up one run and five hits over five and 1/3 innings and got the win for Fresno State. Brandon Burke came on in relief and earned his 11th save of the year. Hedstrom provided the game winning hit, a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
Fresno State added three insurance runs in the eighth to seal the victory.
